Electric Luggage for a Qatar Trip from the Philippines: Qatar Airways, Power Bank and Doha Metro Rules

Flying from Manila to Doha with electric luggage? Qatar is one of the clearest destinations in our guide series, because Qatar Airways publishes a rule written specifically for “smart baggage and rideable suitcases.” It also explains how a removed suitcase battery is counted against its power bank limit. Then the Doha Metro sets its own luggage size limit and a rule on using lifts. This guide walks through each step for a Summit Glide on the PH→Doha route, whether you are an OFW returning to work, visiting family, or connecting through Hamad International Airport (HIA).

Please read it as travel planning, not legal advice and not a boarding guarantee. We checked every rule below on 7 October 2026 (Asia/Manila). Confirm your airline’s current lithium-battery page before you fly.

Quick answer for PH→Doha travellers

  • Qatar Airways: possible. Rideable suitcases with a removable battery of 160Wh or less are accepted as carry-on or checked baggage, provided the battery is removed. The removed battery travels with you in the cabin.
  • Summit Glide battery: 95.7Wh, so it is under the 100Wh line where Qatar Airways asks for prior approval. Qatar Airways also says a removed battery of 100Wh or less from a rideable suitcase is not counted toward its two-power-bank limit.
  • Philippine Airlines: also flies Manila–Doha nonstop. Follow PAL’s own lithium rules (see our PAL and Cebu Pacific battery guide).
  • HIA and the Doha Metro: suitcase mode. Power off, roll it like normal luggage, and use the lifts.

Which flights fly Manila–Doha right now

Gulf routes from the Philippines were disrupted for part of 2026, so check the schedule close to your date. As of 7 October 2026:

  • Qatar Airways flies Manila–Doha nonstop several times a day, based on published schedules, Doha is also its hub for onward connections.
  • Philippine Airlines suspended Doha flights until 30 June 2026 and has since resumed them. Its international timetable dated 8 September 2026 lists PR 684 Manila–Doha (19:00–23:40) and PR 685 Doha–Manila on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. That timetable is for the summer season, and other schedule sites show more days, so confirm the days for your travel date.

Check your flight status before you leave for NAIA.

Qatar Airways: what its rideable-suitcase rule says

Qatar Airways’ baggage restrictions page has a section headed “Smart baggage and rideable suitcases.” It says the rules depend on the battery. In plain terms:

  1. Removable battery, 160Wh or less: permitted as carry-on or checked baggage, provided the battery is removed. If the battery is over 100Wh, you need prior approval from Qatar Airways.
  2. The removed battery: must be carried on board by you and stay inside your carry-on bag, packed so it can’t short-circuit or get damaged.
  3. Removable battery above 160Wh: not permitted as carry-on or checked baggage.
  4. Battery that can’t be removed: not accepted, apart from very small fixed batteries listed on the page.
  5. Bags that don’t meet these rules: Qatar Airways says self-propelled baggage can be booked as cargo instead, subject to its requirements.

Note one difference from Emirates, which we covered in our Dubai guide. Emirates lets a cabin-sized smart bag keep its battery in if the bag is fully powered off. Qatar Airways’ wording says the battery is removed whether the bag goes in the cabin or the hold. Plan to take the Summit Glide battery out at check-in either way.

The Summit Glide battery is listed as removable and rated at 95.7Wh, so it is the kind of bag this rule is written for, and it needs no prior approval under the 100Wh line. The Classic weighs about 8.76kg with its battery and measures 39 × 24 × 50 cm, so compare it with your fare’s cabin allowance. Most travellers will check it and carry the battery. If you want something lighter for the Philippines-to-Doha trip, the Summit Glide Edge with laptop compartment is listed at a 6.5kg body without the battery and adds a detachable matching bag for flight essentials. Edge dimensions aren’t published yet, so check your fare’s cabin allowance before you fly.

Power banks: Qatar’s 2026 rules and how the suitcase battery counts

Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority updated its power bank rules in June 2026, and Qatar Airways applies similar limits on its flights:

  • A maximum of two power banks per passenger, each no more than 100Wh.
  • Power banks go in the cabin only, never in checked baggage.
  • No charging of power banks during the flight.
  • The Civil Aviation Authority says power banks should stay within reach, not in the overhead bin or side lockers.

The useful detail for ride-on luggage is this. Qatar Airways says power banks removed from smart luggage and rideable suitcases are not counted toward the two-power-bank limit, as long as each is 100Wh or less. A removed pack above 100Wh (up to 160Wh) needs airline approval. So a removed 95.7Wh Summit Glide battery should not use up one of your two phone power bank slots. Qatar Airways does add that the power banks you carry count toward your overall allowance of spare batteries, so don’t pack a bag full of spare cells.

Keep the removed pack easy to show at check-in and boarding, with its label visible. Crew can still ask about any battery.

Not the same as hoverboards

Qatar Airways does not allow small lithium-powered vehicles such as hoverboards, e-scooters and balance wheels in hand or checked baggage, even with the batteries removed. The same section says specific rules apply to rideable suitcases and points to the smart-baggage rule above, which is why the battery-removal steps matter. If an agent is unsure, show them that section of the Qatar Airways page. Staff make the final call on the day.

At Hamad International Airport: suitcase mode

HIA’s own security and customs pages don’t publish a rule on riding motorised suitcases inside the terminal. With no published permission, our default is the same as in our other guides: keep the bag switched off, roll it, and follow signs and staff.

  • Arrival: from the aircraft door to immigration and baggage claim, power off and roll.
  • Bus gates: if you board or leave the aircraft by bus, you are on the apron, where no airport lets passengers ride. Make sure the bag is fully off.
  • Transit: many PH travellers connect in Doha. If your whole trip is on Qatar Airways, the same battery rule applies on every leg. If your onward flight is on another airline, check that airline’s smart-bag rule before you book, because some refuse ride-on bags whatever the battery size.

Doha Metro from the airport

HIA has its own Doha Metro station, linking the airport with the city seven days a week. Qatar Rail’s published conditions of carriage set the luggage rules:

  • Each passenger may carry one piece of luggage (not counting small bags) no larger than 85 × 60 × 30 cm.
  • With large luggage, use the lifts, not the escalators.
  • Keep your luggage with you, off the seats, and clear of doors and walkways.
  • Staff may refuse entry if they consider luggage too large or unsafe.

Summit Glide Classic, at 39 × 24 × 50 cm, fits inside that limit, but it counts as your one large piece. If you are also bringing a big balikbayan-style suitcase, the Metro limit means a taxi or ride-hailing car may be easier. Edge dimensions are not yet published on its product page, so measure yours.

Qatar Rail’s user regulations also bar motorised transport such as e-scooters and hoverboards from trains and stations, apart from wheelchairs and folding bikes or scooters. A ride-on suitcase isn’t named either way. Treat it as a suitcase: keep it off, never ride it in a station, and charge it at your hotel or home.

95.7Wh is under Qatar Airways’ 100Wh approval line. That is a helpful spec, not an airline approval. Choosing a model? See Summit Glide Classic vs Edge or browse the Smart Luggage collection.

Qatar Airways is one of the few carriers that names rideable suitcases outright. To see how its rule compares with Emirates, flydubai, PAL and Cebu Pacific, open our comparison of airline rules for ride-on luggage.

Philippine side: before you leave NAIA

  1. Screenshot the “Smart baggage and rideable suitcases” section of the Qatar Airways restrictions page to show at check-in.
  2. Charge the bag at home the night before. Don’t plan to charge it at HIA or on the Metro.
  3. Remove the 95.7Wh battery at the counter and carry it in your hand luggage, with the terminals protected. Our removable battery guide covers the steps.
  4. For terminal habits at home, see the Philippine airports guide and ride-on luggage airport transfers.
  5. Packing for a long contract? Our smart luggage packing checklist helps you stay within the weight allowance.

Airline and ground staff can still refuse any device. Nothing here guarantees boarding on a Manila–Doha flight.

FAQ

Can I bring a ride-on suitcase on Qatar Airways from Manila?

Qatar Airways’ published rule accepts rideable suitcases with a removable battery of 160Wh or less, as carry-on or checked baggage, provided the battery is removed and carried in your cabin bag. Over 100Wh needs prior approval. Confirm on the airline’s page before you fly.

Does the removed suitcase battery count as one of my two power banks?

Not if it is 100Wh or less, according to Qatar Airways. The Summit Glide battery is rated at 95.7Wh.

Can I ride the suitcase at Hamad International Airport?

HIA doesn’t publish a permission to ride, so keep it powered off and roll it like normal luggage.

Will a Summit Glide fit the Doha Metro luggage limit?

The Classic (39 × 24 × 50 cm) fits Qatar Rail’s 85 × 60 × 30 cm limit, but it is your one allowed piece. Use the lifts, not the escalators.
